Can I still see the GP if I’m not registered with GESY?

Yes, you can still book in and see the GP as a private patient if you are not registered on GESY.

Do I need an appointment to see the GP?

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we highly recommend that you pre-book an appointment prior to coming to the surgery. You can always ring us on the day and we will be able to advise if we have any availability within the day.

Am I entitled to GESY?

In order to enroll in the GHS Beneficiary Record, you must be registered in the Civil Registry, or the Registry of the Migration Department and, as the case may be, in the Social Insurance Services Registry.

In addition, the Health Insurance Organisation may request additional certificates and evidence.

What is covered on GESY?

GESY covers:

Can I change my GP?

Yes, you are able to change your doctor. If you have been with your current GP for more than 6 months, you can just go to the new doctor and they will register you. If you have been with the current GP for less than 6 months, you need to request a removal from their list so that you can register with the new doctor of your choice.

Do I have to see the doctor if I need a repeat prescription?

If nothing has changed on your prescription, then you do not need to see the doctor. You can use the “Repeat prescription” form on our website here, e-mail or call us so we can prepare your prescription ready for collection. Alternatively, we can also email you your prescription.

Do I need a referral from my GP to see a GESY specialist?

Your first port of call is always your GP. The doctor will give you a referral if needed to see any specialist or for the microbiologist to take bloods.

The only specialist you do not need a referral for is the Gynaecologist. When booking your appointment, you will need your yellow slip number to hand and they will sort it out for you.

You also don’t need a referral for Dentistry and visits to the A&E.

What happens when my GP is away or on holiday?

In case a GP is absent, they will appoint another GP who will replace them during their absence.  The substitute GP will have access to the medical records of the patients they will serve for that specific time period. Your GP will inform you about the arrangements they have made to be replaced.

Do I have to see the specialist that my GP recommends?

No, you have total freedom of choice of who you go to see. The doctor may have recommendations, but the choice is entirely up to you. Same goes for blood tests and choice of laboratories, and medication and choice of chemists.

Do I have to pay something to see my GP?

You do not have to pay anything to see your GP, but there are some limitations to the number of visits per annum. When the number of visits is exceeded, you will need to pay the GP a co-payment of €15 per visit.

The free visits per age group per year for adults are as below:

Do I need to pay something to see a Specialist Doctor?

Yes, there is a co-payment of €6 to see a specialist doctor with your referral. In case a patient wants to visit the GESY specialist directly, without a referral, they will be required to pay a contribution of €25 euros. Diagnostic radiology tests require a contribution of €10. The only exceptions to having a referral are to visit a Gynaecologist, a Dentist or the A&E.

Can I only use my GP’s referral to a Specialist Doctor once?

Your GP’s referral to a specialist is valid for 3 visits in total within 6 months of the referral date. You do not have to visit the same specialist, but can see other GESY registered doctors of the same specialty with that on your GP’s referral.

Do I have to pay to get my prescribed medication?

Everyone is required to pay a small co-payment per item they receive. However, the co-payments cannot exceed a maximum amount of €150 per patient and per year. If the maximum co-payments are reached, you will not be required to pay any more until the end of the year.

The co-payment is usually €1 euro per medicine and per prescription (not box, as sometimes numerous boxes are needed depending on the prescribed dosage). Prescription medication co-payments may vary, though, depending on what has been prescribed and what is currently available.

Please note that some prescription medication are only available through the General Hospitals’ Pharmacy.

How do I access my GESY Medical History?

You can get access to your medical history by linking your beneficiary file with a user account.

In order to do that, you first need to create a portal account here. To link your account, you will need 2 verification codes – one provided by your GP and another one that will arrive via e-mail.

When you are requesting verification codes from your GP, please note they will only be valid for 24 hours. After that, you will need to request new codes from your Doctor.

Following that, you will need to log into your account on the GESY website, and select “Link your Record” from the initial page and input the two verification codes (from GP and from email).

You will then be able to view all visits, laboratory results and other personal medical history information.
